5 x 5
Lebanese Productions in 35mm
In the context of a total absence of any cinema infrastructure in Lebanon, and the growing scarcity of funds for cinema production, young and fresh graduate directors are compelled to abandon their own projects films, and work for TV commercials and video clips.
For its 3rd edition of its biannual Arab film festival ‘Ayam Beirut alCinema’iya’, Beirut DC has decided to produce 5 short fiction films, of 5 minutes each, on 35 mm, written and directed by young Lebanese filmmakers. This “5x5” project, launched for the first time in the Arab world, aims at reanimating the independent production of short films by young talented directors.
The films have been screened to a large audience during the festival and later distributed worldwide on DVD.
A call for proposal was launched, inviting all those interested to propose their ideas. 35 scripts were submitted, of which three selected and produced:
- Jet Leg (Katia Jarjoura)
- Well Played (Koussay Hamze)
- St. Michael's Beach (Ziad Saad)
A screenplay-writing workshop with scriptwriters / directors ElieKhalife (Lebanon) and Tom Mc Carthy (USA) took place over a period of three weeks, allowing the selected candidates to develop their projects.
