Ayam Beirut IV

Ayam Beirut Al Cinema'iya presented its fourth edition under very special circumstances, as the first major cultural event to take place in Beirut after the 33-day Israeli war on Lebanon.

This edition was held between the 16th and the 23rd of September 2006. 31 films (features, shorts and documentaries) have participated to this special edition out of a more extensive selection that has to be condensed due to the political events that took place a month before.

Many premieres took place during the festival including the Lebanese feature films Falafel by Michel Kammoun, which opened the festival (World Premiere), and The Last Man, newest feature of renowned director Ghassan Salhab (Arab Premiere) as well as Bled Number One, second feature film by Algerian director Rabah Ameur-Zaimecheand Bamako, latest feature by Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako (both Arab premieres). The Sundance award-winning documentary Iraq in Fragments by James Longley also had its Arab premiere in Ayam Beirut in the presence of the filmmaker.

The festival had many parallel activities including the "Videos under Siege," 25 videos produced during the July War on Lebanon, documenting the daily life of the Lebanese under siege, or of Lebanese filmmakers who were trapped outside Lebanon during this period. Other activities included a performance by artist Rabih Mroue, a dance performance by Yalda Younes, and screening/debate by Bassam Haddad. The festival wrapped up its activities with a concert of Rima Khcheich who played a setlist of songs that appeared in Arab movie classics.
