Ayam Beirut Al Cinema'iya 2008 (1)

Ayam Beirut V

The fifth edition of Ayam Beirut Al Cinema'iya was held between the 17th and the 26th of October, with the support of the Med-Screen Project (of the Euromed Audiovisual II Program) and several valuable sponsors and media partners.

It featured more than 60 films from the Arab World and on the Arab World, divided between feature films, short films, documentaries, videos, retrospectives, Arab cinema classics...

The selection covered the four corners of the Arab World, with films from Iraq and unto Mauritania.

The festival decided to support the first documentary of young Lebanese filmmaker Simon El-Habre, choosing to screen the Beirut DC-produced The One Man Village as its opening film. The documentary has since then participated to more than 30 festivals around the globe, winning several prestigious awards.

The selection also contained several Arab premieres including the 2008 Cannes selected Adhen (Directors' Fortnight, by Algerian director Rabah Ameur Zaimeche) and Salt of This Sea (Un Certain Regard, by Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir). The closing film Je Veux Voir (also selected for the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes 2008), brought the international icon Catherine Deneuve to present the film in Beirut alongside directors Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige.

Tributes to the late Lebanese filmmaker Randa Chahhal and the acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, a children screening, several Egyptian classics, a retrospective of the films of Tunisian-born filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche who also gave a masterclass with his main actress, Elodie Bouchez, for Lebanese students, another master class on creative documentaries by Bruno Ulmer, a conference on copyright, a workshop on HD technologies, a pitching session, a book launching, a forum for all the visiting directors… These were some of the activities and parallel screenings to this edition of Ayam Beirut.

In its closing ceremony, the festival has decided to support the Lebanese filmmaker Ghassan Salhab by awarding it a symbolic prize (a third of each festival ticket sold) to finish the post-production of his latest feature documentary 1958.
